Projects

Projects executed by EDINNA to modernise inland navigation training across Europe.

Our Projects

Herewith we present you an overview of the projects executed by EDINNA and its members. These projects have been instrumental in shaping competency-based education and training for the inland waterway transport sector across Europe.

Ongoing

ARIELL

Future-proof IWT Sector, Where Everyone Works Together Across Borders

The ARIELL project is committed to modernizing inland waterway transport (IWT) education and training across Europe. By blending theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice and digital tools, we aim to deliver high-quality, accessible learning experiences that align with the EU Directive 2017/2397.

Our mission is to address the growing demand for well-trained professionals in the IWT sector and to foster cross-border collaboration through innovative, technology-driven solutions.

Completed

IWTCOMP

Competency Based Inland Waterway Transport Education & Training

The IWTCOMP project prepared inland navigation and training institutes in training and assessing with the competency-based approach. This was done within an Erasmus+ project with partners from Romania, Germany, Slovakia and the Netherlands.

During the project an EQF comparison between different countries was developed. Furthermore, best practices related to competency-based education within the participating institutions and other related sectors were collected. A Train the Trainer course was developed as an integral part of the implementation of the new EU directive on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications in Inland Navigation.

COMPETING

Competence Based Education and Training for Inland Navigation

COMPETING paves the way for the introduction of competency-based future-proof education and training for inland navigation crew members throughout the European Union. Future certificates will be recognised throughout Europe. Sustainable solutions, automation and digitalisation as well as communication on a European level will be part of the education and training programmes.

The ultimate goal of the project is to increase labour mobility in the inland shipping sector. COMPETING is an Erasmus+ project. A follow-up project ‘1System 4 IWT Learning’ is currently being finalised.

Partners: IWT education & training institutes, social partners (employers and unions), competent authorities and umbrella organisations
Completed

RIVERSPEAK

Standard Communication Phrases for Inland Navigation

RIVERSPEAK has been developed to enhance safety in inland navigation through standardization of communication in the English language, and to support the training institutions and their students in achieving this objective.

The focus lies on communication between inland navigation vessels, with land stations on inland waterways, in coastal areas and on communication on board vessels. The programme consists of ten bi-lingual versions with different languages commonly used on inland waterways.

Ongoing

ETRB

European Training Record Book

EDINNA encourages all European inland navigation schools and training institutions to start using the new and uniform European Training Record Book. The ETRB provides a standardised framework for tracking competency development across all member institutes.

Completed

DANUBE SKILLS

Increased institutional capacity in Danube navigation by boosting joint transnational competences and skills

To assist education and training entities in the Danube region in building their institutional and organizational capacity so as to match the standards for competence of inland navigation personnel, as contained in EU Directive 2017/2397.

Danube SKILLS partners jointly prepared the transnational model course on Safety Practices for emergency situations during ship operation on Operational Level, structured in five learning modules: safety of work, medical first aid, personal survival techniques, fire fighting and environmental protection.

Completed

PROMINENT

Promoting Innovation in the Inland Waterways Transport Sector

Funded from the Horizon 2020 programme, PROMINENT addressed the key needs for technological development and barriers to innovation and greening in European inland navigation, in line with the NAIADES-II action programme.

Work Package 4 supports the harmonisation and modernisation of professional qualifications on a pan-European level, focusing on simulations and digital tools, European electronic Service Record Book and Logbook, and the integration of inland navigation in general logistics education.

Completed

TTIET

Train-the-Trainer Course for Inland Navigation Simulator Training

In the framework of the Leonardo da Vinci Programme, EDINNA members developed a Train-the-Trainer Course for Inland Navigation Simulator Training. In case you would like to receive a hardcopy of the Course Material, please contact the EDINNA Secretariat.

Completed

CMINET

Course Manuals for Inland Navigation Education and Training

Course Manuals were developed as an integral part of the Standards of Education, Training and Certification for Inland Navigation. They support institutes with the implementation of the competence framework into their education system. The project ran from October 2012 to April 2015.

PLATINA II

Platform for the Implementation of NAIADES II

PLATINA II contributed to improving the qualifications of inland navigation workforce by elaborating standards for tools and by developing teaching aids. Under “jobs and skills”, technical standards for ship-handling simulators were created, a concept for electronic service record books was prepared and the impact of IWT in logistics education was increased.

Completed

PLATINA

Platform for the Implementation of NAIADES

Highly qualified personnel are crucial for the efficient operation and competitiveness of tomorrow’s fleet on European inland waterways. The NAIADES action programme demonstrated that the lack of skilled labour will pose a major problem. Three actions were supported: set-up of EDINNA, development of a life-long learning initiative, and a European IWT recruitment campaign.
