Newsletter edition autumn 2021
Forword
Dear EDINNA members and associated members,
We finally see light at the end of the tunnel of the corona pandemic. I really hope that you and your loved ones are in good health.
Although I believe that all our institutes are up and running again the COVID ghosts follow us in all our of adventures.
As the EDINNA board we therefore had to postpone our General Assembly meeting again. Instead of being in Varna we will organize a Q&A session about the implementation of the new EU directive 2397/2017 on Tuesday the 9th of November from 13.30 until 15.30 hours.
TOure new face to face GA meeting is now foreseen between the 16th and 18th of May 2022 in Varna, Bulgaria.
Our host has offered us the possibility to extend the meeting for one day so maybe the GA meeting will last until the 19th of May.
It is very promising to see how many institutes are investing in new IWT simulators and new training vessels. In this way Education and Training institutes show their commitment to the IWT branches all over the EU.
Modern ships and modern IWT entrepreneurs and companies are in need of highly educated and trained staff .
Modernizing IWT training and education will lead towards a modernized IWT fleet and staff all over the EU and the third countries.
The original goals when we started our association, one EU IWT license for all crew members on board on OL and ML level and one level playing field in EU IWT training and education, seems to come closer and closer .
The third goal: one uniform IWT language on all EU IWT waters has not been regulated yet. As not come to fruition yet. BUT: it becomes more and more clear, that in the end, Riverspeak will be accepted as the only solution to avoid “Babylonian language errors”.
Until now we have not seen an attempt to create an overall EU Quality and Control system in our field . Of course it is very important to create such a system to avoid diploma tourism and to support the “ equal level playing field “” thought. EDINNA will stay focused on this point !
As said I hope you all are and will stay healthy. Hope to see you online!
Kind regards,
Arjen Mintjes, Chairman EDINNA

SANDRA-II officially inaugurated
Duisburg sets standards with simulator centre for inland navigation

SANDRA (Simulator for Advanced Navigation Duisburg – Research and Application) has been a synonym and benchmark for education and training of boatmen and boatmasters in inland navigation at the radar and shallow water navigation simulator at the Schiffer-Berufskolleg RHEIN in Duisburg-Homberg since 2008.
On the 10th of September 2021, the successor-simulator SANDRA-II was officially inaugurated. The manufacturer of the new facility is the world’s largest supplier of marine simulators, Wärtsilä Voyage Solutions. This means that the most modern simulator for inland navigation in Europe is now once again available at the Schiffer-Berufskolleg RHEIN in Duisburg.

As many as six bridges plus a seventh at the DST site, all of which exceed the European requirements of CESNI (European Committee for the Elaboration of Standards in Inland Navigation) for full mission inland-simulators, will be used immediately for inland navigation training, further education, research and examination purposes.
The practical examinations for boatmasters, which will be mandatory in Europe from 2022 on, can also be carried out simultaneously by up to three examination boards working independently and in parallel. In addition, the facility is available to the industry for training and further education purposes.
The driving simulator helps trainees to experience the diverse training content for themselves in a safe learning environment and thus prepares them for the demanding challenges of inland navigation practice.
In keeping with the inland navigation tradition, all those involved wish the facility: “Have a good trip – in God’s name!”
