The EDINNA Newsletter, Spring Edition

Foreword

Dear members and associated members of EDINNA,

During the last weeks we saw our peaceful Pan European IWT world crumbling and we had to face the harsh reality,  that a peaceful co-existence is not always possible, even in the middle of Europe .
In the last years we helped our Ukrainian colleagues to implement the changes in their educational IWT programs due to the new EU directive 2397/2017. Professors of the Maritime Academy Odessa were trained at the simulator center of the Maritieme Academie Harlingen and trainers of the STC group gave input on other IWT topics to  colleagues from Odessa and Kiev.
Since 2009 they are members of EDINNA.

Now the situation in that area has changed abrupt.
Colleagues from Poland, Slovakia Republic, Hungary and Rumania work at their borders to help thousands of refugees coming from Ukraine.
Other EU colleagues help by setting up fund raising campaigns at their institutes.
As chairman of Edinna I am in contact with our members from Ukraine by mail. They send their students home at the beginning of the war and try to organize distance learning.
I really hope that everyone is in good health and that this war will end soon. Violence and war never are solutions as we stated in our first mail from the EDINNA board.
We have to sail our ship together regardless our nationality, believe or sex!
I also received personal messages from our Russian colleagues stating that they absolute disagree with this war and feel humiliated by their politicians.
We have received a proposal to stop collaboration with our Russian Federation members and will discuss this at our GA because that’s the way to do so written down in our statutes.
Personally I will stay in contact with those colleagues from the RF who are brave enough to speak out against war knowing what the consequences can be.
We will continue the preparations for the GA in Varna although this are very insecure times. I hope we will see each other there in person.
Please register yourself!

I hope to see you in Varna!

Students Maritime Academy Harlingen make room for Ukrainian refugees

The Maritime Academy Harlingen has contacted Ukraine to offer help. This ultimately resulted in the care of a mother with 10 children between the ages of 1 and 19. The Ukrainian children in Harlingen have started school this week after a week of recuperation and nesting. “For the seven teenagers, between the ages of 12 and 17, that means English lessons. It’s also fantastic to see how our own students interact with their Ukrainian peers. Sometimes with hands, feet and Google Translate. But increasingly also in English.”

Two babies and toddlers are housed in a daycare center during the day and the other children are taught as at primary school. ‘We are now looking at whether the nine adults can go to work. But that’s not going to be easy.”

General Assembly

As previously announced, the EDINNA General Assembly will be held at the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy (NVNA) in Varna, Bulgaria on May 17-18.
Given the situation in Ukraine and we do not know what the developments will be, the board of EDINNA will make a final decision on April 7 whether the GA will continue. In the meantime, we will continue with the organization and hope we can all meet in Varna. Because we were unable to organize the physical meetings of the GA due to COVID-19, the board has decided to lower organizational fee per delegate to €25,-

Call: register to participate!! We look forward to meet each other again!!

How to adapt or adopt the new and harmonized inland navigation educational material

All inland waterway navigation schools and training institutes please pay attention! We would like to invite you to the first online seminar about the outcomes of project COMPETING. During this seminar we will explain how to adapt or adopt the new and harmonised inland navigation educational material.

The last three years a consortium of various European Inland navigation educational institutions and social partners joined forces to work on seven competencies and the accompanying teaching materials, both at operational and management level. The competencies include navigation, ship operation, cargo handling, stowage and passenger transport, maritime engineering and electrical, electronical and control engineering, maintenance and repair, communication and health, and safety and environmental protection.

In the coming months we are organising several online seminars to inform you about the developed educational material and to guide you on how you can adapt or adopt it.
This event is especially relevant for those who are responsible for the curricula or lesson content at inland navigation schools and training institutions.

Please do register for the first edition of the Online COMPETING seminar series!
