As we navigate through the year, it is my pleasure to welcome you to another edition of the EDINNA Education in Inland Navigation Association newsletter. In this issue, we celebrate the remarkable achievements and ongoing efforts of our community, dedicated to advancing education and training within the inland navigation sector.
This year has been particularly significant, marked by innovative projects, strategic partnerships, and the tireless commitment of our members to fostering a culture of safety, competence, and sustainability on our waterways. One of our highlights includes the launch of several new initiatives aimed at integrating advanced technologies into our training modules. These initiatives not only ensure that our curricula remain at the cutting edge of industry standards but also equip our trainees with the skills necessary to meet the evolving demands of the sector.
Moreover, our collaborative efforts with international organizations have opened new avenues for knowledge exchange and professional development. By embracing these opportunities, we strengthen our community and reinforce the global standing of EDINNA as a leader in inland navigation education.

Survey on inland navigation education in the EU

In the newsletter before the summer holidays, we had announced this survey. Since then, 16 schools have taken the time and effort to complete the survey, thank you! Obviously, we want to have the best possible impression of inland navigation education in Europe. Therefore, we have left the survey open for a few more weeks. You can complete the survey until 1 November at the latest.

Survey objective:
– To collect data on the number of teachers and students in inland navigation education.
– Identify trends and challenges in inland navigation education.
– Improve the quality and harmonisation of training within the EU.

How can you participate? At the bottom of this mail you will find the start button of the survey. We greatly appreciate your participation and input!

Why is your participation important? Your experience and insights as an inland navigation school are invaluable. Together, we can strengthen inland navigation education in Europe and educate future generations well.

CESNI update

CESNI meeting summary – 17 October 2024

The CESNI meeting on 17 October 2024 in Strasbourg took important decisions on standards for inland navigation. Member states present approved new versions of ES-TRIN 2025/1, the European standard for technical regulations for inland navigation vessels, and ES-RIS 2025/1, the standard for river information services. Major amendments include low flash point fuels, explosive areas, electric propulsion and digitalisation of information and navigation systems.

In addition, provisional guidelines were approved for the storage of gaseous hydrogen, intended for innovative pilot projects. The CESNI work programme for 2025-2027 was also adopted, setting priorities in new technologies, emission-free propulsion, digitalisation and modernisation of manning regulations.

The new standards will come into force from 1 January 2026 in both the European Union and the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine (CCNR).
